Kelso Abbey **

Description:

The Abbey was founded by monks who were invited by King David I. Although the monks originally settled at Selkirk, they relocated to Kelso in 1128, closer to David’s new castle at Roxburgh.

Thanks to the Earl of Hertford whose troops in 1545 stormed, sacked and destroyed the Abbey, little remains of the once-sprawling monastery precinct. But what survives of the church is one of the most spectacular architectural achievements in medieval Scotland.
