Description:
Founded in 1150, Dryburgh Abbey, like other great Border abbeys, endured heavy damage during the wars with England. The Reformation in the 16th century only added to its troubles. In later years, much effort went into preserving the ruins. The chapter house still showcases paintwork from its original construction and is celebrated for some of the finest Gothic architecture in Scotland.
In 1832 Sir Walter Scott (See: Abbotsford House) was buried here.
