Description:
This massive, though long-neglected, 16th-century ruin was commissioned by James Hepburn, Earl of Morton, as a retreat for his retirement. However, it was never completed, as the Earl never lived to enjoy his years of quiet reflection. He was deeply entangled in the murder of Darnley, the second husband of Mary, Queen of Scots and for this he was executed on 2 June 1581.
