Before setting of on a 'fact-finding' mission in Scotland I had of course been preparing myself as to the route and the places I would most probably visit. Melrose was on my list as I'd never been there before. This small town was a very positive eye-opener. Beautifuly situated on the river Tweed amidst attractive countryside Melrose offers the visitor so much! Not only is the centre a pleasant place with plenty of shops and some sidewalk cafes, it is also right next to the ruins of Melrose Abbey, by many (and me!) considered as the most impressive of the Borders cathedrals. As you're in Melrose anyway, why not have a look at Abbotsford House, home of the 19th century novelist Sir Walter Scott. For those people on one of the many walking trails Melrose of course offers many an option to rest the weary feet. There is plenty of all kinds of accommodation!
