Description:

Duntrune Castle, near Kilmartin, is one of the few remaining Norman-influenced stone castles that first appeared in Scotland in the 12th century. Perched alone on a rocky promontory, it once commanded a key sea route from the Western Isles to the central Highlands. Its setting is striking, rising almost straight from the sea and gazing out over the Sound of Jura. Historians aren’t sure who built the original castle, or when Duncan Campbell—whose father supported King Robert the Bruce—was granted a royal charter for “Duntroon.” The Campbells held it until it was bought by the Malcolms in 1792.

It is a private residence but can be visited by appointment. Duntrune also offers very romantic private accommodation!
