Description:

Carleton Castle’s crumbling remains lie just south of Lendalfoot in South Ayrshire, about 6 miles (10 km) southwest of Girvan. Built in the 15th century, the castle features a small rectangular tower, with one corner now collapsed. The Cathcarts of Killochan held it from the 13th century, guarding both a mountain pass and the old Portpatrick road that once ran along the high ground. Local legend tells of Sir John Cathcart, who allegedly sustained his lifestyle by marrying and then killing a series of wives. His last wife, May Kennedy of Culzean, discovering his intentions, is said to have pushed him from a cliff. To this day, his ghostly screams are rumored to haunt the ruins.

The tower is located on private farm land where permission will need to be sought to gain access to the ruin.
