Dun Dornaigil Broch **
Region: Caithness, Sutherland & Ross
Scotland's Finest: Dun Dornaigil Broch
Description:
Dun Dornaigil, also known as Dun Dornadilla, is an impressive drystone roundhouse perched just above the Strathmore River. Brochs, found only in Scotland and dating back over 2,000 years, are thought by some researchers to have been defensive structures, while others believe they symbolized prestige and power, showcasing the wealth of local chieftains. Likely, they served multiple purposes. The remaining walls of this broch tower rise up to seven meters high in places. Its northeast entrance is closed due to a collapsed upper section, but above it sits a distinctive triangular lintel, believed to have been a status symbol.
What I personally found fascinating was the way this broch so much 'resonates' with it's surroudings. The narrow quiet road, the low lying hills and the realisation that way back in the past this was a true beehive of activity. Loved it!
