The Battle of Alltan-Beath happened in 1542 in the village of Knockarthur, fought between Clan Mackay and Clan Sutherland, whose chiefs were the Gordons, Earls of Sutherland. After about 15 years of peace, Chief Donald Mackay led a group of men to Knockarthur, burned it, and seized goods from Strathbrory, but Clan Mackay was eventually driven off.
