Elcho Castle ***

Description:

A very interesting and impressive castle. On this spot overlooking the Tay there must have stood a predecessor, as this castle originates from the later part of the 16th century and William Wallace took shelter in Elcho Castle in the late 13^th century (!) The lands of Elcho were granted to the Wemyss family by James III in 1468 and Charles I made Sir John de Wemyss an Earl. This same Earl however later championed the parliamentarians and consequently faced James Graham, Marquis of Montrose over the barrel of a gun in the battle of Tippermuir.
