Description:

For many years, this was an exquisite hotel, but it’s now a private residence. Ackergill could easily have been a two-star castle, but it’s currently closed to the public and can only be seen from the road along the A99 between Wick and John O’Groats.

In the early 17th century, the Sinclair Earls of Caithness were the Lords (Lairds) of the castle, and it was garrisoned by Cromwell’s troops in 1651.
