Description:

A natural depression on Martyrs' Moss and a place of concealment for the Covenanters in the 17th century. The Martyrs' Moss is so named after the 3 Covenanters - Joseph Wilson, John Jamieson & John Humphrey who passed this way and were captured, shot & buried on nearby Carsgailoch Hill (55.404264,-4.294835). Their companion Alexander Jamieson (brother of John) made his escape but was pursued, captured and taken to Cumnock where he was locked up in the tolbooth. What later became of him is unknown.
