Description:
This six‑stage route follows the wild and atmospheric western shore of Loch Ness. Although the Great Glen Way is not technically strenuous, several sections are indistinct and demand solid navigation skills. Together with the South Loch Ness Trail, it now forms the full “Loch Ness 360°”, circling one of Scotland’s most iconic landscapes.
Beginning in Fort William, a major walking hub linking routes such as the Cape Wrath Trail, Scottish National Trail, East Highland Way, and West Highland Way, the trail threads its way northeast through the Great Glen. It continues to Drumnadrochit, where it meets the Affric Kintail Way, before finishing in Inverness, gateway to the John o’Groats Trail.
Along the Loch Ness section, walkers are rewarded with sweeping panoramas, dramatic Highland scenery, and a wealth of natural and historic sites. The route’s well‑graded paths and steady daily distances make it suitable for most walkers, and it can comfortably be completed in five to six days.
News: The section running along the east side of Loch Oich is now open to the public again. The Invergarry link will remain open as an alternate option for people wishing to pass through Invergarry.
