Description:

This two‑stage journey from Callander to Inversnaid offers a wonderfully varied introduction to the Trossachs. Although the path can be indistinct in places—making basic navigation skills useful—it remains a beginner‑friendly route with good waymarking, modest distances, and only a few short, steep sections. Apart from a brief muddy stretch near Inversnaid, the path surface is generally excellent.

The route threads its way past a chain of iconic lochs: Venachar, Achray, and Katrine along the length of Strath Gartney, before finally reaching Loch Arklet. Each section reveals a different character of the landscape, from quiet forest edges to open water views and classic Highland scenery.

As you approach the end of the first stage, the path meets the shores of Loch Katrine at the historic Trossachs Pier. Here you have a choice: continue on foot along the lochside or board the famous steamship Sir Walter Scott for a scenic cruise to the next point on the route. Both options lead to Stronachlachar and both offer superb views.

From Stronachlachar, it is only a short and pleasant walk to the old garrison at Inversnaid on the eastern shore of Loch Lomond, where the route concludes amid dramatic scenery and a strong sense of history.

Stages:

  1. Kilmahog (Callander) - Trossachs Pier 19 km (Easy)
  2. Trossachs Pier - Inversnaid 28,5 km (Slightly harder)
