Description:
The Berwickshire Coastal Path is a spectacular four‑stage route tracing the rugged coastline from Cocksburnpath to Berwick‑upon‑Tweed. As one of Scotland’s Great Trails, it offers an unforgettable mix of dramatic scenery and rich history.
Walkers follow some of the highest sea cliffs in Britain, passing sweeping sandy beaches, natural arches, sea stacks, and the atmospheric ruins of Fast Castle perched high above the waves. The path curves around St Abb’s Head National Nature Reserve, a haven for seabirds and a highlight for wildlife enthusiasts, before descending into the picturesque fishing village of St Abbs and continuing onward to Eyemouth.
The final stage leads along more clifftops before crossing the border into England and finishing in the historic town of Berwick‑upon‑Tweed.
This borderland was fiercely contested throughout the Middle Ages. Berwick‑upon‑Tweed, the largest town in the area, changed hands between England and Scotland more than a dozen times before England finally secured it in 1482. The turbulent history adds an extra layer of depth to a walk already rich in natural beauty.
