Carn Liath Broch *
Region: Caithness, Sutherland & Ross
Description:
Carn Liath is a great example of a solid-based broch tower. Today it stands 3 meters tall, though when complete it may have reached at least three times that height. Around it lies the enclosure with the remains of a connected village – a rare survival of stone houses and outbuildings. Broch owners were often wealthy and well-connected. This is clear at Carn Liath from finds like a distinctive copper-alloy ingot and a silver brooch, dating to the AD 300s or 400s, inspired by Roman designs.
