Elgin Cathedral **

Description:

This cathedral was once known as ‘The Lantern of the North’ and even now these haunting ruins are magnificent. Haunting because of the sheer violence directed against it by Alexander Stewart (Earl of Buchan), the brother of King Robert III, also known as the ‘Wolf of Badenoch’ in 1390.

Reconstruction had hardly started when another attack happened in 1402. Once more reconstruction started and this time 'peace' lasted for some 200 years. In the 16th and 17th century however the cathedral's structure really started to unravel. What can be seen today is, although magnificent in its own right, just a pale shadow of its former glory.
