Description:

The Cateran Trail is a 5‑stage circular walk with an overall difficulty rating of 3 (Moderate). Walkers should be prepared for occasionally steep terrain and will benefit from confident map‑reading skills.

This fully waymarked 104 km route winds through the glorious landscapes of Perthshire and the Angus Glens, exploring a surprisingly quiet corner of Scotland while never straying far from civilisation. The trail follows old drove roads and ancient tracks across a varied mix of farmland, forests, and open moorland.

Many sections retrace the very paths once used by the Caterans — the notorious cattle raiders who terrorised Strathardle, Glenshee, and Glen Isla from the Middle Ages through the 17th century. Their legacy gives the trail its name and adds a layer of history to this beautiful long‑distance route.
