Description:

Perched on the shore above Loch Awe in Argyll is one of Scotland’s most unique churches, St Conan’s Kirk. Though it appears ancient, it was only dedicated in 1930. Walter Campbell of Blythswood set out in 1907 to expand the small parish church on site into a memorial for the Campbell family.

An amateur architect and avid collector of the unusual, Campbell took on the design himself, weaving in materials, objects, and curios gathered from his travels. The result is a fascinating blend of styles, from the Norman and Romanesque interior to Celtic motifs and even pagan symbolism, such as the stone circle at the entrance gate.
