Chesters Roman Fort is the best-preserved Roman cavalry fort in Britain, originally built to guard the Roman bridge that carried Hadrian’s Wall over the River North Tyne. You can still see the full foundations of the headquarters building, and the bath house by the river is remarkably well preserved. Even today, the outlines of the buildings and traces of the old crop fields remain clearly visible.
