The Macdonalds were the Lords of the Isles and sit at the heart of the history of Gaeldom. Six interconnecting galleries take you through 1500 years of the history and culture of the area once known as the Lordship of the Isles. The museum follows the story through triumph, bloodshed and trauma. From the downfall of the Lordship, through the
Jacobite risings, to the sweeping cultural changes where clansmen became crofters and chiefs became landlords. The final episode of this grand, but ultimately sad, tale deals with emigration and the challenges of making a new life overseas. You can also explore the archive centre with books on tartans and clan histories.
