Description:

Long before the construction of Hadrian's Wall the northern frontier of Roman Britain was marked by a series of forts and watch towers along a ridge of high ground running between Dunblane and Perth.

At a certain point the Romans retreated to what is now the Scottish-English border and in AD 120 constructed Hadrian's Wall. However 20 years later the frontier had moved north again, the Antonine Wall was constructed and some of the ridge forts were reoccupied.

Ardoch Fort is one of those early forts. When it was reoccupied in the 140s it was one of the largest Roman stations in Britain and one of the best preserved in the Roman Empire. The remains comprise a rectangular area of around two hectares, surrounded by a rampart and up to five ditches in places.
