Description:

Carsluith was owned by the Cairns family until 1460, when it passed to James Lindsay of Fairgirth, the Chamberlain of Galloway. He likely built the main tower at Carsluith in the late 15th or early 16th century. The castle then passed through a daughter to Richard Brown. In the 1560s, the Browns of Carsluith added a stair tower on the north side. They emigrated to India in 1748, and the castle has remained unoccupied ever since. In the early 19th century, new farm buildings were added to the castle, forming a U-shaped steading that still stands. Today, the castle ruin is a Scheduled Ancient Monument cared for by Historic Scotland.
