Description:
Created by trail‑blazer par excellence Cameron McNeish, the Sutherland Trail is a superb long‑distance route threading through some of the wildest and most dramatic landscapes in the Northwest Highlands. The journey runs unmarked from Lochinver to Tongue, following a mix of paths, stalker tracks, rough off‑trail terrain, and occasional stretches of minor tarmac road.
Although the route passes beneath iconic mountains — Suilven, Canisp, Ben More Assynt, Arkle, Foinaven, Ben Hope, and Ben Loyal — none of the summits are (of course) compulsory. Walkers can admire these giants from below or add them as optional detours. A tent is a must. There are long sections without accommodation. Take 1:25 maps with you (laminated!) as, on this trail, it is very easy to get completely lost! Or.......go digital! (sometimes no signal though!)
