Description:
Reaching the sparse ruins of Fast Castle takes some effort, but it’s absolutely worth it! This place is a real treat and one of my personal favorites—shame there’s no fourth star to give. Perched on a lonely crag 48 meters above the sea, the dramatic remains only come into view when you’re almost upon them. It’s not too tricky to cross over, and with gulls crying, waves crashing far below, and breathtaking views all around, it’s an unforgettable experience that easily earns three stars........but that is of course very personal!
Its unique location—connected to the mainland by just a narrow bridge—made this stronghold of the Homes nearly impregnable. The name “Fast” comes from “Fause” (false), tied to the tale that its occupants lured ships with lanterns hung from the cliffs. Mistaking the lights for safety, ships struck the rocks, and survivors were ruthlessly killed while their goods were taken. You can still see the man-made channel carved into the rock’s base. Later, the Logans took over, and in 1503 even Margaret, the 14-year-old daughter of Henry VII, stayed here en route to marry James IV, while her massive retinue of 1,500 had to spend the night in Coldingham—how they managed that is anyone’s guess!
