Description:

On October 3rd, 1594, the Catholic Earls of Huntly and Errol, leading just 1,500 horsemen, managed to defeat the much larger Protestant royalist army under the Earl of Argyll. Records suggest Argyll’s forces numbered between 6,000 and 10,000 infantry. Huntly’s edge came partly from his six small artillery pieces, but also from the betrayal of John Grant of Gartenberg, one of Argyll’s allies. Grant secretly struck a deal with Huntly and withdrew his forces from the fight. It was a dramatic clash with deep, tangled roots, marking a clear victory of artillery and cavalry over regular foot soldiers.
