Battle site of Blar na Leana (1544) -
Region: Aviemore & The Cairngorms
Description:
In 1544, a brutal clash took place that became known in English as the ‘Battle of the Shirts’ or the ‘Battle of the Field of the Swampy Meadow.’ Clan Fraser was ambushed and nearly wiped out by Clans MacDonald and Cameron. Records from the time say that out of 800 men on the field, fewer than twenty survived, and because of the day’s intense heat, the fighters removed their plaids and mail shirts, battling only in their white undershirts. The fight occurred on land now submerged at the head of Loch Lochy. The place has always captivated me—and it truly is beautiful.
