Long Distance Walking Trails

The Long Distance Walking Trails are the perfect way to explore the land, train the body and sooth the soul at the same time. A sense of freedom and self reliability with a touch of timelessness and near childlike wonder. Walking (or ambling) also gives you ample time to think and reflect on your life. Although I usually create my very own route using detailed maps, I can very well understand the attraction of the Trails. Most of them are signposted and all of them are well documented. The Trails are also ‘designed’ to show the countryside in all its glory and most of them also take rest stops and accommodation into account.

Underneath you'll find the Long Distance Walking Trails in Scotland. Each separate trail is linked to a site with all the details.

A majesty all of its own

Grading (Developed by Walkhighlands):

Grade 1 - Easier walks, mostly on well defined paths, with no special difficulties.

Grade 2 - Slightly harder walks. Paths may be indistinct and navigation skills are required.

Grade 3 - Moderate hillwalks. Terrain will be steep, map reading skills essential. This grade includes the most straightforward and popular Munros.

Grade 4 - Harder hillwalks. Can include longer walks and pathless sections calling for more careful navigation. There may be scree and minor scrambling. This grade is quite broad and includes the bulk of the Munros.

Grade 5 - Tough by hillwalking standards; these routes can be very arduous or include trickier scrambling. Includes the hardest or most strenuous Munros.
