Description:
Dating back to the 12th century, the original building was rebuilt in the 15th century, beginning with the vaulted stone choir constructed in 1439 by Adam Hepburn of Hailes. From the 1300s, people reported miracles after drinking from a nearby well, and Whitekirk soon became a major pilgrimage site. In 1914, the church was set on fire, allegedly by suffragettes, but was later restored. Originally painted white—giving the village its name—it has, for some reason, never been repainted.
