Dun da-Lamh ***
Region: Aviemore & The Cairngorms
Description:
The Pictish fort of Dun da-Lamh sits on a rocky hill at the northeast end of Black Craig, overlooking the meeting of Glen Shira and the River Spey to the north, and Strath Mashie with the River Mashie to the south. The views from up there are incredible! Inside, the fort spans about 4,000 square metres, with uneven ground and several rocky outcrops. The eastern and southern slopes are steep, marked by sheer cliffs. The ramparts, built from small slabs, still show parts of their original face above the rubble, especially well-preserved on the west side. Up to 7.5 metres wide, they must have been an impressive sight in their day.
