Description:
Burnswark towers a thousand feet above the Solway plain, visible from miles away. At its summit lie the remnants of a native hill fort, while its north and south slopes once held two massive Roman camps, each capable of housing over 6,000 soldiers. Recent discoveries suggest Burnswark was the first target in the Roman invasion of Scotland around 140 AD, when Lollius Urbicus, acting on orders from the new Emperor Antoninus Pius, led an assault on the hill fort that commanded the surrounding countryside.
