Inveraray Castle **
Region: Argyll & The Isles
Description:
Inveraray Castle (Caisteal Inbhir Aora) has stood on the shores of Loch Fyne, Scotland’s longest sea loch, since the 1400s. Its grey-green stone rises above the parkland, creating a striking contrast with the rugged Highland scenery. The Royal Burgh of Inveraray sits about 60 miles northwest of Glasgow, near the castle.
While the castle remains the residence of the Duke of Argyll, Chief of Clan Campbell, many of its rooms, adorned with French neo-classical decor, are open to visitors. The main hall rises to the full of the house and showcases an impressive collection of weapons. Guests can also admire tapestries, paintings, and artifacts of special significance to Clan Campbell, including Rob Roy McGregor's sporran and dirk handle.
Visitors enter the famous Armoury Hall containing some 1300 pieces including Brown Bess muskets, Lochaber axes, Scottish broadswords and preserved swords from the Battle of Culloden. Explore the castle and see the French tapestries, fine examples of Scottish and European furniture, a wealth of other works of art together with a genealogical display in the clan room.
